Helsinki – Fluctuations in electricity prices have become the new norm. Kapacity.io is introducing a new heat pump control service to the market, offering households peace of mind during volatile electricity price periods and helping to automatically take advantage of the most affordable electricity moments.
In the spring of 2023, Kapacity.io piloted smart control for heat pumps in collaboration with households, as part of the Sitra "Using data to curb energy use" -solution search. The pilot's goal was to determine how well Kapacity.io's artificial intelligence algorithm is suited for residential-scale heat pump applications. Previously, the service had been available only to large residential and commercial properties.
Kapacity.io spot control during price peaks. The results of the pilot confirmed that Kapacity.io's solution is also excellently suited for home control. Households with fixed electricity contracts achieved an average of 10% savings on their energy bills, while those with market price electricity contracts saved up to 25% on the price of electricity. In addition to the savings achieved by households, Kapacity.io's control helps shift consumption to times optimal for the network's capacity.
Weather-based optimization reduces setpoint temperatures slightly when outdoor temperatures rise. Finland is among the countries with the highest number of heat pumps per capita in the world. The importance of heat pumps is further emphasized as we seek sustainable solutions for heating and cooling properties. The energy stored in the structures of homes acts like a thermal battery, which Kapacity.io's technology optimizes to reduce electricity consumption and costs while maintaining a consistent and comfortable home temperature. This "thermal battery" already exists at home and leveraging it with a heat pump requires no initial investment.
